Yesterday we went for a photo shooting with our wonderful models Isabella and Héla to a small but absolutely charming turf house museum, the Íslenski bærinn heritage museum. This exhibition is dedicated to the Icelandic Turf House that kept Icelanders alive and nurtured their culture throughout the centuries. Here guests can see how these houses were built, how people lived in them and learn about their origin and cultural context, their contemporary significance, subtlety and beauty. The curator Hannes Lárusson grew up on the farm who belonged to his grandparents and takes his guests to a journey back in time when daily life went by at a much slower pace than today. His grandparents lived in the farm up to the 1960´s, still working the fields with horse power. |
From October 2016 we will be offering Northern Lights tours to this magical place twice a week. Pick up is at your guesthouse and hotel and during the 40 minutes journey from Reykjavík to the museum our guides will take you back in time, when the evenings were spend in the „baðstofa“ (sitting/sleeping room) and the women worked the wool and the men read aloud by candle light. You will hear about how Icelanders spend christmas, how they worked the land before electricity and heavy farm machines and about the folk stories of elves, trolls and giants. At the museum we will be given a tour of the old farm and exhibition and will enjoy a cup of hot chocolate (coffee or tea) and genuine Icelandic pancakes with blueberry and cream.
With a little luck the aurora borealis will be dancing in the sky. The old turfhouses will surely be a wonderful setting underneath this great natural phenomenon! Join us on a very different and unique Northern Lights Heritage tour starting in October 2016!
