An unforgettable natural phenomenon!

Due to its location near the Arctic Circle, Iceland is an ideal place to observe the Northern Lights, also known as the “Aurora Borealis.” The name originates from Latin and Greek. Aurora is the Latin word for dawn, as the Northern Lights often appear in the colors of sunrise, illuminating the sky. Borealis comes from the Greek word “Boreas,” the god of the north wind, referring to the geographical location of the Northern Lights near the North Pole.

In short, Aurora Borealis means “Northern Lights” or “Dawn of the North.”
They are particularly visible during the winter months when the nights are long and dark. Red Northern Lights are rarer and occur at higher altitudes. Blue and violet lights are often fainter and harder to see.

The Aurora Borealis is often described by locals in Iceland as mystical and magical, with a deep cultural significance. In Icelandic folklore, the Northern Lights were seen as signs from the gods or spirits. Some legends say they are the spirits of the deceased lighting up the sky, while others believed they bring luck and protection, especially for expectant mothers. In modern times, the Northern Lights have an almost mystical allure for travelers from all over the world, symbolizing the beauty and unpredictability of nature.

Scientists also study the Northern Lights to learn more about solar winds and the earth’s magnetic field. With the right clothing and a warm drink, the experience becomes even more intense and enjoyable!

I hope you’ll be as fortunate as I was in witnessing so many incredible displays!

Emmely

Text & photos by: Emmely

The weather in Iceland

https://www.exploringiceland.is/blog/the-weather-in-iceland

https://www.exploringiceland.is/blog/the-weather-in-iceland#comments

Uncategorized

Whether you’re planning a trip to Iceland or are just curious about the changeble weather, here’s a deep dive into what makes Iceland’s weather so unique.Unlike many other countries with well-defined seasons, Iceland experiences rapid and sometimes unpredictable shifts in weather. We still have all the four seasons of course but they have a way of blending with eachother and you never know wha [...]

Whether you’re planning a trip to Iceland or are just curious about the changeble weather, here’s a deep dive into what makes Iceland’s weather so unique.

Unlike many other countries with well-defined seasons, Iceland experiences rapid and sometimes unpredictable shifts in weather.

We still have all the four seasons of course but they have a way of blending with eachother and you never know what you can expect when you step out the door.

Winter (November - March): Winters in Iceland are long, dark, and cold but not as extreme as one might expect. Temperatures are typically between -1°C and 4°C (30-40°F). Snowfall is common, especially in northern regions, and the days are short, with only a few hours of daylight in December and January. This is prime time for witnessing the magical Northern Lights or see the wonders of Iceland coverd in snow.

Spring (April - June): Springtime brings longer days and milder temperatures, ranging from 0°C to 10°C (32-50°F). Snow begins to melt, especially in the lowlands, revealing Iceland’s vibrant green landscapes. However, occasional snow showers can still surprise visitors, particularly in early spring.

Summer (June - August): Summers are relatively mild, with temperatures ranging from 10°C to 20°C (50-68°F). The highlight of this season is the Midnight Sun, where daylight can last up to 24 hours in some parts of the country. This is the best time for outdoor activities, including hiking, horseback riding or taking a road trip along the famous Ring Road.

Autumn (September - October): The transition from summer to winter is swift, bringing cooler temperatures (5°C to 10°C or 41-50°F) and increased rainfall. It’s also another great season to catch the Northern Lights as darkness returns.

Unpredictability
One of the most important things to know about Iceland’s weather is its sheer unpredictability. It’s not uncommon to experience sunshine, rain, snow, and strong winds—all in the span of an hour! The saying “If you don’t like the weather, wait five minutes” is especially true here.

Wind: Iceland is famous for its strong winds, which can sometimes make it feel much colder than the actual temperature. Wind gusts can reach over 50 mph, especially in open landscapes.

Rain: Rain is a frequent companion, particularly in the southern parts of the country. It can be persistent but usually light, and sudden showers are the norm.

Fog and Mist: Coastal areas often experience foggy conditions, particularly in the mornings, adding an ethereal beauty to Iceland’s already dramatic scenery.

If you plan to visit Iceland, preparing for its unique weather is essential:
It‘s good to pack layers. Many of today’s elderly, now in their 80s, grew up during a time when horses were essential for everyday life. From transportation to haymaking, postal services, and carrying goods across Iceland’s challenging terrain—including deep glacier rivers and high mountain passes—horses were not just companions; they were lifelines.

During our visit, we witnessed firsthand how deeply these memories still resonate. Meeting Kári (25 years old) and Hljómur (24 years old), two of our retired horses, stirred sweet recollections and old stories from the seniors. The volcanic peninsula is one of the few places on earth, where we can literally watch how the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates pull apart, creating a dramatic landscape made of many layers of large lava fields, hot springs and boiling mud fields.

The Mid-Atlantic Rift
As the North American and Eurasion tectonic plates pull apart, magma from deep within the Earth's mantle rises to the surface, leading to eruptions that form new land and shape a completely new landscape. These eruptive processes have happened many times in the geological record of Reykjanes, and there is no indication that this will change in the near future. Still, when a volcano erupted on the Reykjanes peninsula in the remote Geldingadalur Valley on March 19, 2021, it was a new “first” because over 800 years had passed since the last eruptions in this area.

Not surprisingly, this truly beautiful eruption was a huge draw for locals and tourists alike! This initial eruption was followed by nearby fissure eruptions in 2022 and 2023 that lasted each only a few weeks. By October 2023, seismic activity had shifted more westward. To be on the safe side, the Icelandic Department of Civil Protection and Emergency Management decided to evacuate Grindavík, a small fishing village on the south coast of Reykjanes and it has stayed evacuated ever since, although some companies and people have returned, at least temporarily.

Living with volcanoes
In Iceland, volcanoes are a part of our everyday life, contributing to our comfort by supplying us with plenty of geothermal energy, fertile ash, and unique landscapes that have made Iceland a favourite among nature loving travellers. Think of rugged black lava, the shiny black obsidian and the colourful fields made of rhyolite in the Landmannalaugar Nature Reserve! Volcanic activity also provides important resources for spas and wellness sites such as the famous Blue Lagoon and many other geothermal bathing springs and allows Icelandic farmers to grow important produce in greenhouses nationwide. Don´t forget to check out Friðheimar, the absolutely charming Greenhouse Restaurant in the Golden Circle area when you come to Iceland!
Despite the frequency of eruptions in Iceland (in general, an eruption occurs every 4 years), their impact is mostly and luckily only felt in remote areas, away from people and infrastructure, and does usually not disrupt air travel.
Commitment to safety for you & us
Public safety is our utmost concern whether you are tourist or a local.
