Boring country life?

We are sometimes surprised by the comments of both Icelandic town people and foreign guests that they find country life a bit boring and unvaried. We could not disagree more! Granted, we do not have the choice of restaurants, movies, theaters, fitness clubs and other places where civilized people meet for recreation. But we sure have our own measures of excitement!

Just the other day we had the pleasure of free
exercise during a fresh countryside walk while finding the leak in a 3 km cold water line and two days later breaking the Icelandic  200 m sprint record in indoor slippers fighting off a gyr falcon of one of our best laying hens. Instead of going to a restaurants we either ask friends over for a meal at home or simply gate crash parties in the next community. Considering prices for alcoholic beverages in Icelandic bars you need to either rob a bank or be a very cheap drunk anyway

Fitness training or boot camp are for free all year round and you will be surprised to find that mucking out stables gives beautiful even back muscles and running after naughty horses and escaped goats will provide you with the exciting cross country run of a lifetime. We do not need sleeping pills because when we go to bed we are completely knackered. Same goes for the movies – we would fall asleep after the commercials anyway.

But instead we do get hours of lovely horseback riding in Iceland´s beautiful and pristine nature – under the midnight sun in summer and through white glittering powder snow in winter. Instead of going to the Bahamas or Bali we enjoy travelling through the beautiful countryside of Iceland, driving around Iceland on the 1500 km ring road, visiting friends and family, going for highland trekking tours on horseback and on foot, enjoy the Northern lights from the private hot pot or the hot stream of the secret place we are not telling you about if you keep on talking about boring country life  :-)

Give us the nature, the horses and the freedom – you can keep the rest!
