It just could not get more more authentic and Icelandic! Can you imagine seeing thousands of sheep running down from the highland where they have just spent their summer? The ancient tradition of rounding up the livestock is kept alive in Iceland and truly an experience of a lifetime since you you are invited to be one of the group to herd and sort the animals. Imaging being part of this and riding through the beautiful autumn colors underneath Mt. Hekla and along Þjórsá, Iceland´s longest glacial river. The Þjórsárdalur valley with its vast and colorful pumice fields and pseudo craters makes a spectacular backdrop of scenery. And a night the Northern lights dance across the starry sky. Riding days are up to 3-5 hours per day and easy as we mainly follow the speed of the sheep.

September 10th Thursday: Reykjavík - Hjálparfoss – Viking Farm Replica - Riding with the sheep through the mountains
At 9 am meet & greet at your accommodation in Reykjavík. Please be ready in your riding clothes. Private transfer in the morning to the farm in the beautiful Uppsveitir where we start riding at a fascinating Viking Farm Replica which is also one of the location of the famous Game of Thrones series. Here we saddle up and ride to the beautiful basalt column framed waterfall Hjálparfoss before meeting up with the huge herd of approx. 3.000 sheep coming from the mountains. We follow the sheep and help the herders to drive the animals on country lanes underneath Mt. Hekla and along the glacial river Þjórsá. We leave the sheep at Fossnes Farm and drive to Fosshotel Hekla*** with its cozy country style rooms, a restaurant and bar room with open fire and hot tubs outside to wait for the Northern Lights! Dinner and evening individually. Riding: Up to 5-6 hours in the saddle.
September 11th Friday: Sheep Round Up Skaftholtsréttir
We need to get up early today as the herders start moving at dawn. It is a wonderful sight to ride into the early autumn morning with the lifting morning mist from the river and be part of this traditional event. At approx. 10 am we will have arrived at the sheep paddock and the annual sorting begins shortly after. Each farmer has to find his sheep in the herd and sort them into his private pen. We take part in the sorting and follow one farmer with his sheep to his farm. Dinner and evening individually at the hotel. Riding: Up to 4-5 hours in the saddle.
September 12th Saturday: Reykjaréttir Sheep Round Up - Þjórsá river banks - Geothermal bathing spring
After breakfast we take the horses to Reykjaréttir, another Sheep Round up and ride along the beautiful remote river banks of glacial Þjórsá River with amazing glacier views before relaxing in a geothermal bathing spring and stopping for a lovely dinner option at a country restaurant. Up to 4-5 hours in the saddle.
September 13th Sunday: Hrepphólahnjúkar – Sólheimar - Reykjavík
After breakfast and check out at the hotel we set off for our last ride to a secluded valley. We ride across river Stóra-Laxá and through a wide canyon to the picturesque basalt columns of Hrepphólar to Sólheimar Farm and its charming heritage museum. After lunch we cross the salmon river again and enjoy magnificent views of the canyon before returning to the farm. Return to Reykjavík in the late afternoon. Good to know: When you participate in the Round Ups you are experiencing the real Thing! You will be one of the group to herd and sort the animals. Of course that means long hours outside in sometimes cold weather. Iceland in autumn has many colors and types of weather. Anticipate to be in golden sunshine one moment and to ride in rain and even sleet during the next. We therefore recommend to dress well during these tours, to bring long woolen underwear and lots of woolen socks and gloves. It is also good to bring some quick energy supplies like chocolate. A warm rider is a happy rider! Individual travel insurance is not included in the tour price.
We encourage clients to obtain relevant travel insurance before visiting Iceland.
