Day by day itinerary - suggestion
Day 1: Grábrók Crater – Glanni waterfall – Hvítserk – Borgarvirki – Kolugljúfur (5-6 hours)
In the early morning transfer from your guesthouse/hotel to Borganes town to meet with your guide. We head north to Grábrók crater that was formed in a fissure eruption less than 3000 years ago. The 170 m high crater is the largest of craters on a 600m long fissure. We climb Grábrók crater and enjoy beautiful views of the surrounding landscape. Our next walk takes us to the impressive lava rock waterfall Glanni in Norðurá river, one of the best salmon rivers in Iceland. Look out for the salmon jumping up the fish ladder! Nearby is Paradísarlaut – the „Hollow of paradise“ a beaufiful oasis in the rugged lava. We continue on the ringroad to North Iceland and take short walks at the Hvítserkur cliff, the Borgarvirki Borgarvirki "Citadel", a columnar basalt fortress and 15 m high volcanic plug on Vatnses peninsula and the dramatic Kolugljúfur canyon, with its beautiful waterfall Kolufossar.
Day 2: Lake Mývatn – Hverfjall crater – Dimmuborgir lava formations – Mývatn Nature Baths - (4-5 hours)
Today we will go on a journey through an area of extreme contrasts and pure breathtaking geology. We walk along the shores of Lake Mývatn with its unrivaled duck bird population, hike up to the top of the biggest tephra crater in Europe “Hverfjall” crater (130m) and through the bizarre Dimmuborgir lava formations. On the way we visit the Grjótagjá caves, famous setting of the series “Game of Thrones”. We conclude the day with a relaxing bath in Jarðböðin, the Mývatn Nature Baths!
Day 3: Ásbyrgi Canyon – Vatnajökull Nationalpark – Húsavík – Whale watching ( 4-5 hours)
Today we will spend the whole day hiking in Vatnajökull Nationalpark. We will walk through the lush birch forest at Ásbyrgi Canyon, where Odin´s horse Sleipnir left an imprint of his hoof – according to Norse mythology! Our route today offers an excellent view over Ásbyrgi and the Jökulsá river canyon. The trail takes us along the eastern rim of Ásbyrgi as far south as Klappir where catastrophic floods in Jökulsá River have carved some amazing shapes, the Giant´s kettles, into the rock. The view over Ásbyrgi is simply breathtaking. From Klappir we head head east over the moor to Jökulsá and along Gilsbakki gorge. After the hike we drive to the cozy harbour town of Húsavík for an optional whale wathing tour in one of the beautiful oak boats to see the gentle giants of the atlantic.
Day 4: Súlur - Reykjavík (5-6 hours)
The mountain Súlur is the town-mountain of Akureyri, rising above the town in south-west. It has two peaks, the highest one reaching about 1213 meters. The peaks are mainly made of light rhyolite (liparit) which is a volcanic material, created during volcanic eruptions around 8-9 million years ago. We go for a energizing walk to Súlur in the morning before returning to to Reykjavík by domestic flight in the afternoon.
