Itinerary suggestion:
Day 1 Arrival – Blue Lagoon – Reykjavík Pick up your rental car right at Keflavík International and head for Reykjavík, the vibrant capital with its charming nordic colorful houses and lovely Old Harbor area. Depending on your arrival time you might want to add a visit to the Blue Lagoon, a short ride in between the Rauðhólar pseudocraters in Reykjavík´s backyard or a Reykjavík Food Walk for your non-riding travel companions. Day 2 Snæfellsnes Peninsula with a fast tölt on the beach Leave Reykjavík in the morning and head for Snæfellsnes Peninsula with its ever changing landscape: Rugged coastlines, volcanoes, glaciers and the Golden Löngufjörur Beach. The best way to explore Löngufjörur beach is without doubt on horseback! For those who would like to try other activities we can highly recommend a lava tunnel exploration, a hike to Rauðfellsgjá gorge or even a glacier adventure with the snow cat (season and weather depending).. Day 3 & Day 4 Skagafjörður – the Mekka of Icelandic Horse Breeding Traditionally the Skagafjörður area has been the heart of Icelandic Horse breeding and it still is. Stay for two nights and enjoy a short or whole day in the saddle while your non-riding companions check out wild water rafting, try salmon fishing and go back in time and take on the Sturlunga Clan in a virtual fight. Day 5 Akureyri – the capital of the North Continue to Akureyri, the cozy town settled by the Eyjafjörður Fjord. How about trying out the local Beer SPA with Beer tasting for non-riders and an evening boat tour to the beautiful island of Hrísey – home to puffins and a true nature gem in this breathtaking fjord. Day 6 & 7 – Lake Mývatn with coastal Ride and geothermal baths! Spend two nights in the Lake Mývatn – Húsavík area and go for a lovely ride along the seaside with views over the wide Skjálfandi bay and its high mountain ranges to both sides. This area is also known for being the best spot for whale watching in Iceland– sail out onto the bay with great chances of seeing playful humpback whales, the black and white orcas and Blue whales – the largest whale an mammal on earth. Definitely visit the infinity baths of Geosea Iceland with ocean view and the greenish blue Mývatn Nature baths as you go touring around beautiful Lake Mývatn with its pseudocraters, harlequin ducks and Dimmuborgir Lava formations. Day 8 & 9 Adventures at the Wilderness center Head for East Iceland and spend two nights in a museum as you will stay at the one-of-a-kind Wilderness Center where the riders will go for a day ride and non-riders can spend the day hiking and at the Wilderness Exhibition. In the evening meet in the Wilderness SPA with geothermal bath and sauna. Day 10 & 11 Underneath Vatnajökull Glacier Continue your drive towards the magnificent Glacier Lagoon and go for a zodiac tour on the milky colored water and join a breathtaking ice cave tour into the blue ice of Vatnajökull glaciers. Hiking is possible at Skaftafell National Park and of course so is horse back riding. Day 12 Black Beaches, waterfalls and puffins Today´s route takes you towards Vík where you can discover the black lava beach in the saddle, by ATV or simply on foot! Or you go for a kayaking tour on a glacial lagoon before enjoying a trip to mighty waterfalls Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss. Day 13 Golden Circle – Reykjavík It is time to visit the Golden Circle with Gullfoss Waterfall, Geysir hot springs and Þingvellir National Park before returning to Reykjavík or Keflavík for your last night.
