This is an 8-day, 7-night private guided tour combining Reykjavík with North Iceland. It can be customized with the group’s preferred accommodation, meals, guide language, and activities.

The journey includes Reykjavík, Akureyri, Lake Mývatn, Goðafoss, Dimmuborgir, Námaskarð, Grjótagjá, the Mývatn Nature Baths, Húsavík, Ásbyrgi, Hljóðaklettar, and—when conditions allow—Dettifoss. In summer, the return south may follow the Kjölur Highland Route; in winter, the group can fly back to Reykjavík.

Tour Overview

This itinerary is a suggestion for private groups who want to stay in Reykjavík for the whole time but explore Iceland by daily excursions with a private driver guide out of Reykjavík.

In the capital area we have a number of excellent hotels that can accommodate small and larger groups who want to explore Iceland´s nature during the day but like to spend the evenings in the capital to try Reykjavík´s fine cuisine and cultural life.

Day by day itinerary

Day 1: Arrival and Relaxation
After arriving at Keflavík Airport, start your journey with a relaxing soak in either the famous Blue Lagoon or the more intimate Secret Lagoon. Then, travel to Reykjavik for an evening exploring the city. Overnight stay in Reykjavik.

Day 2: Reykjavik to Akureyri
Embark on a picturesque drive to Akureyri, passing through winding countryside roads. Highlights of the day include: Kolugljúfur Canyon: A hidden gem known for its dramatic gorge and waterfalls. Glaumbær Turf Houses: Visit the historic turf farmhouses of Glaumbær, offering a glimpse into Iceland’s past. Akureyri: Arrive in Akureyri, Iceland's charming northern capital, where you’ll stay for the next three nights.

Day 3: Exploring Lake Mývatn
Discover the unique landscapes of Lake Mývatn, including: Goðafoss Waterfall: Known as the "Waterfall of the Gods," Goðafoss is a must-see. Dimmuborgir Lava Formations: Explore the "Dark Castles" of Dimmuborgir, a labyrinth of lava formations. Skútustaðagígar Pseudocraters: Marvel at these unusual landforms created by steam explosions. Námaskarð Geothermal Area: Witness the bubbling mud pots and fumaroles at Námaskarð. Grjótagjá Cave: Visit this small lava cave with a geothermal hot spring inside.Mývatn Nature Baths: End the day with a relaxing soak in the warm, mineral-rich waters of the Mývatn Nature Baths. Drive back to Akureyri for the night.

Day 4: Diamond Circle Tour
Explore the wonders of the Diamond Circle, including: Húsavík: Known as the whale-watching capital of Iceland, Húsavík offers incredible opportunities to see these majestic creatures. Ásbyrgi National Park: Discover the horseshoe-shaped canyon, believed to be formed by the hoofprint of Odin’s horse.Hljóðaklettar (Summer Only): Visit the “Echo Cliffs,” known for their unique rock formations and acoustics.Dettifoss Waterfall: Depending on road conditions, visit Europe’s most powerful waterfall, Dettifoss. Head back to Akureyri for your final night in the north.

Day 5: Return to Reykjavik
Drive or Fly Back to Reykjavik: Summer Option: Drive the scenic Kjölur Highland Route, passing Gullfoss waterfall and Geysir geothermal area. Winter Option: Enjoy a free morning in Akureyri before flying back to Reykjavik. Spend the evening in Reykjavik, where you’ll stay for the next three nights.

Day 6: Reykjavik City Tour and Free Afternoon
Explore the capital with a guided tour of Reykjavik’s key landmarks. Enjoy optional activities such as whale watching, FlyOver Iceland (a virtual reality experience), or the immersive Lava Show. Overnight stay in Reykjavik.

Day 7: South Shore or Golden Circle
Option 1: South Shore Adventure: Explore the stunning south coast, including:

Seljalandsfoss & Skógafoss Waterfalls: Iconic waterfalls that you can walk behind and admire up close.
Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach: Visit the dramatic black sand beach with its towering basalt columns.
Village of Vík: A charming seaside village surrounded by breathtaking landscapes.

Option 2: Golden Circle Tour: Discover Iceland’s most famous sights:

Þingvellir National Park: A UNESCO World Heritage site where the tectonic plates meet.
Geysir Geothermal Area: Home to the erupting Strokkur geyser.
Gullfoss Waterfall: One of Iceland’s most beautiful and powerful waterfalls.

Reykjavik: Return to Reykjavik for your final night.

Day 8: Departure
After a memorable journey, you’ll be transferred to Keflavík Airport for your departure.
