Tour Overview
This is our new charming horse riding tour with the locals – ideal for couples, families and small groups of friends. This lovely four day ride takes you to some of the most beautiful riding tracks in vicinity of Mt. Hekla in South Iceland.
Ride with us through breathtaking grassy trails that wind through the serene Icelandic countryside. As we venture deeper into nature, we enter the striking lava fields beneath the mighty Mt. Hekla, where the landscape shifts and the spirit of the Highlands comes alive. Along the way, we stop to explore the oldest turfhouse in Iceland—a rare and fascinating glimpse into the country’s cultural heritage. At the end of each adventure-filled day, unwind at the new hotel Lóa, located in the village of Hvolsvöllur.

Day by day itinerary
Day 1: Meet the locals and the horses
Pick up at 10 am at your hotel in Reykjavík. Please be ready in your riding clothes at pick up. We drive straight to our horses located in a beautiful field of South Iceland. Before we start riding we enjoy outdoor lunch on the premises. After an introduction to your two horses and into the safety issues, tack and gaits of the Icelandic horse we set off for a lovely gentle ride over good tölting tracks through the lush countryside. The horses go back to the field which is located only 15 min drive from the hotel.

Day 2: Tölt with Mt Hekla view
After heartful breakfast we meet the horses again and now we settle for a full day ride. We ride on Heklubraut with a wonderful view of Mt. Hekla, the most famous volcano in Iceland. (weather depending). We enjoy our picnic lunch at a beautiful spot and continue riding on ancient viking paths surrounded by old lava and purple lupin fields. We follow gravel roads and soft grass paths up to our mountain cottage at Foss where we leave the horses for the night and drive back to hotel.
Day 3: In the hoofsteps of the Vikings
Leaving Foss behind, we make our way back to the lowlands. The horses seem to sense they’re on the homeward trail—their pace quickens, their energy rises. Riding a tölting horse across the soft, open terrain, surrounded by mountains and glaciers, is pure exhilaration. It’s more than a ride; it’s a feeling of freedom and connection that stays with you.
Along the way, we pause at the historic farmhouse at Keldur—the oldest standing farmhouse in Iceland. This remarkable structure is the last of its kind, known as the old passageway type. With its wooden frame and Romanesque architectural details, Keldur stands as a quiet yet powerful
reminder of Iceland’s deep-rooted past. Stepping inside is like stepping back through the centuries. We enjoy a BBQ dinner by the field before driving back to the hotel.
Day 4: Farewell ride – Back to Reykjavik
On our final ride, we journey to the banks of the Rangá River, passing through lush countryside and enjoying the beautiful views and spirited horses. We then return to the field, say our goodbyes to the horses, and begin our drive back to Reykjavík. Arrival in Reykjavík is scheduled for the afternoon. Exploring Iceland reserves the right to alter routes, itineraries or timetables should the necessity arise. The estimated duration of tours as indicated by km or timing can change according to road or weather conditions.
