On this 6 days horse riding tour in Iceland we will ride across different mountains and plains and into deserted valleys on the eastern part of the Snæfellsnes peninsula.
We follow old travel routes, which were only accessible on horseback in the old days and even today, only very few people still use these tracks on horseback. As an extra bonus we get to enjoy the great experience of riding tölt over black lava sand when we cross the bay behind Stóri-Kálfalækur at low tide.
We travel according to Icelandic tradition, with regular stops to give horses and riders a good rest. Riding with a free-running herd allows for changing horses en-route and ensures that all horses can carry their riders through Iceland at brisk speed without tiring out.
We leave the herd behind at our daily destination. We go back to the farm by car or mini-bus at the end of our daily rides and are taken back to the herd the next morning after breakfast.
Homemade food is provided by our hosts. Enjoy traditional Icelandic dishes which have been adapted to the European taste - made with love, delicious and plentiful.

Day by day itinerary
Day 1 – Arrival in Iceland – Stóri-Kálfalækur
Arrival at Keflavik Airport and bus transfer to Reykjavik (flight and transfer to be organised individually). Meeting at BSI bus terminal in Reykjavik at 6:30 p.m. Private group transfer to the farm Stóri-Kálfalækur on the Snæfellsnes peninsula. Check in and dinner at the farm. Overnight stay at Stóri-Kálfalækur for next 7 nights.
Day 2 – Stóri-Kálfalækur – Myrdalur (ca. 25 km)
On the first day we ride through grasslands and cross rocky grounds at the foot of a mountain range. Our destination today is the farm Myrdalur, which offers great views over the grasslands against picturesque rocks and as far as the Atlantic Ocean. On a clear day you can even see the snowcapped Snæfellsjökull glacier at the tip of the Snæfellsnes peninsula.
Day 3 – Myrdalur – Bíldhóll (ca. 30 km)
Today we cross Heydalur from south to north and arrive at the farm Bíldhóll on the northern coast of Snæfellsnes at the end of our ride. Thanks to numerous rivers and lakes the area is heavily vegetated and we can enjoy the green surroundings throughout today‘s ride.
Day 4 – Bíldhóll – Dunkur (ca. 25 km)
We start today‘s ride on the northern edge of Heydalur. Riding up the northern slopes of Bíldhólsfell mountain we reach Rauðmelsheiðarvegur, which is an old trail, and ride in easterly direction. We finish today‘s ride at Dunkur.
Day 5 - Dunkur – Hítarhólmur (ca. 25 km)
Today we continue our ride on rough tracks which were used by shepherds and traders in the past and are still used by shepherds and travellers today. We follow Skrauma river, which leads us into Burstadalur valley. On our way, we can see the remains of an abandoned farm. We cross Svínbjúgur mountain and descend the steep slopes to Hítarvatn lake. In clear conditions, we can enjoy the majestic views of the colourful volcanic landscape around us. We ride along the western edge of the lake and end our ride at Hítarhólmur, where we leave the horses for the night.
Day 6 – Hítarhólmur – Stóri-Kálfalækur (ca. 38 km)
We enjoy another day in a beautiful volcanic valley. Crossing lava fields we ride over hills until we get to Hítardalsrétt, an old sheep round-up place which is still in use today. We continue our ride through Hagahraun lava field and cross rivers on the way. We ride past Brúarfoss waterfall and follow the gravel road back to Stóri-Kálfalækur for the last 9 km of our ride. Overnight stay at Stóri-Kálfalækur.
Day 7 – Stóri-Kálfalækur – Stóri-Kálfalækur (ca. 20 km)
(depending on the tide, we may start the tour with this leg) A stunning day at the Atlantic Ocean. The coast is rugged and we ride through vast, spectacular fjords at low tide and watch out for eagles on the rocks and horses running free in the dunes!
Day 8 – Transfer to Reykjavik
After breakfast the organised transfer bus takes us back to Reykjavik. Drop-off will be at bus terminal BSÍ.
