If you are coming to Iceland to do some trail riding but would also like to see as much as possible in just a few days we can highly recommend this tour. In only five days you will have the chance to get up and close with volcanoes, canyons, waterfalls and of course the amazing Icelandic Horse. With a little luck you will also get to see some of the endearing seals along the Vatnsnes peninsula. Our comfortable rides go along superb and easy trails – perfect for learning the soft tölt, the special gait of the Icelandic Horse.
During this tour we stay at the farm Stóra-Ásgeirsá situated beautifully in the the Víðidalur Valley in Northwest Iceland. The small guesthouse offers cozy double and single rooms and our cheerful host and guide Magnús will keep you smiling throughout the day! A hot tub is situated right next to a waterfall for a relaxing bath after the ride. This tour is recommended for intermediate and experienced riders that are capable and happy to ride for up to 5-6 hours/30 km a day. You should feel comfortable riding in all gaits over rough terrain. |

Here we are greeted by our hosts Magnús and Rannveig with some coffee and cake. We saddle up and go for an easy approx. two hours ride to get accustomed with the the tack, the way of riding and of course the tölt! Dinner and hot tub at the farm! Riding distance: ca. 10 km. Accommodation Stóra-Ásgeirsá: made up beds in double rooms with shared facilities. Hot tub on site. Day 2: Friday: Hrísar – Valdarársrétt – Fitjá – Kerafossar – Lækjamót – Stóra-Ásgeirsá After a good breakfast we saddle up for our first long day of riding and go from Hrísar along the Fitjá river to the stunning waterfalls Kerafossar, where Rannveig awaits us with a lovely lunch before we return on the westbanks of Viðidalsá river to the renown breeding and training farm Lækjamót. Here trainer Ísólfur Lindal Þorisson and his team welcome us and show us some professional riding including speed tölt and flying pace while we enjoy a lovely meal in their restaurant adjoining the riding hall. After the meal and a good chat with these wonderful horse people we go back to the farm either by car or on horseback. Riding distance: ca. 18-24 km. Day 3 Saturday: Along Víðidalsa river – Kolugljúfur canyon – Sealwatching under the midnight sun Today´s ride takes us along the eastbanks of Víðidalsá to the magnificient Kolugljúfur canyon. We leave the horses in a paddock and go for a walk to discover the incredible beauty of this deep canyon and its lovely waterfalls. Don´t forget to take your camera today! After our picnic lunch we return to the farm for a barbecue with Icelandic specialities! Riding distance: ca. 15 km. Day 4 Sunday: Stóra-Ásgeirsá – Bogarvirki – Stóra-Ásgeirsá Today we have a long day in the saddle before us! In the morning we ride to Borgarvirki „citadel“, a columnar basalt volcanic plug. It is up to 15 m high and lies above 177 m over sea-level. From the top we have a wonderfull view over the Vatnsnes peninsula. In the Sagas it is mentioned that Borgarvirki was used by the resident families as a fortress in feudal wars as recalled in the Saga of Finnbogi. We return to the farm for delicious farewell meal and a last relaxing bath in the hot tub. Most likely Magnús will entertain us with his guitar and some songs since he is also a professional singer! Riding distance: ca. 30 km. Day 5 Monday: Vatnsnes Peninsula – Sealwatching – Hvítserkur – Reykjavík After breakfast we make our picnic lunch and mount our horses for one more time to take them back to Stóra-Ásgeirsá on a slightly different route (riding distance ca. 15 km). Now it is time to say good by to our lovely hosts and go by motor power along the Vatnsnes peninsula, a place of great natural beauty. It is home to some of the largest seal colonies in Iceland and we will stop at a few promising ones along the way to watch these cute animals! We will also view Hvítserkur, a 15m high monolith. Legend has it that Hvítserkur was a troll caught by the sunrise while attempting to destroy the Christian monastery at Þingeyrar. At Hvammstangi we visit the Seal Museum. Arrival in Reykjavík in the evening and drop off at BSÍ bus terminal to catch the flybus or at your accommodation in the capital area.
