A solar eclipse is an astronomical event in which the Sun is partially or completely obscured by the Moon as seen from certain areas on Earth. For a solar eclipse to occur, the Sun, Moon, and Earth must be aligned in a straight line.
During a total solar eclipse, the apparent diameter of the Moon is larger than that of the Sun, so the Moon completely covers the Sun. The total solar eclipse on August 12, 2026, will mostly take place over Greenland, Iceland, and the northern Atlantic Ocean. The maximum eclipse will occur west of Iceland in the Atlantic, where the total phase will last for 2 minutes and 18 seconds. For many who experience it, a total solar eclipse is a long-lasting memory. The following phenomena can be observed during a total solar eclipse: sudden darkness, the quieting of nature, rising winds, and, if visible, the flying shadow or the appearance of bright stars. |
