Northern Lights
in Iceland

Our hand picked Northern Lights tours

When do you turn on the Northern Lights?  This is a common question we get in Iceland.
Unfortunately we can never guarantee to see the Northern Lights.
The spectacle of Aurora Borealis requires dark and partly clear skies.
In Iceland you can look up Aurora Forecast,
An Aurora watch on Facebook, Aurora Service and more.

Step back in time - Heritage Northern Lights tour

For private groups only!
Min:  6 persons / Max: 18 person.
More information
Step back in time with Exploring Iceland and join us on an authentic Icelandic Experience in the darkness underneath the Northern Lights. Find out how our ancestors lived in the old times and listen to stories of ghosts, elves and trolls. Find out how Icelanders celebrated Christmas and how changes were brought about in the daily life in the old turf house farms throughout the centuries.  With a little luck we will experience the amazing Northern Lights dancing in the sky - far away from light pollution and the beautiful setting of the old turf houses in the background! Don´t forget to bring your camera!

Before we head back to Reykjavik we enjoy a treat of hot chocolate and delicious Icelandic pancakes specially hand made on the old stove for us!

Northern Lights chase

We begin our chase by departing from Reykjavík at a scheduled time and drive out of the city to escape the light pollution. Darkness and clear skies are essential conditions in order to see the Northern Lights and we use our experience as well as several weather forecasts to determine the best location each night. While we are searching for the lights, our knowledgeable guides will enlighten you on facts about the Northern Lights and tell you a few tales of their choosing. A decision is made daily at 17:00 hours as to whether the tour will take place or not. Please visit the operator´s website:  www.thuletravel.is  for more information.
