All seasons in Iceland have their special charms but without doubt spring awakening in May and June is a incredible time in Iceland! After a long winter the days are getting longer by the day and in June the sun hardly sets. Summer solstice is in Mid June and you will be able to enjoy the beautiful Midnight Sun. But even in the end of May the days are already considerably longer than in Mainland Europe.
Thousands of birds flock to Iceland to nest and raise their chicks and the air is filled with jubilant bird songs. The cute lambs are born in May and soon after birth follow their moms out on the fields around the farms. Waterfalls are mighty as the snow begins to melt in the highland and nature in general seems to „explode“ ! Join our lovely host Aníta as she welcomes guests to her farm to show them the beauty of South Iceland, the sights of the Golden Circle and the South Shore, as she takes you hiking and horseback riding in the vicinity of Mt. Hekla, one of Iceland´s most famous volcanoes. This tour is for intermediate and experienced riders and less demanding than a highland ride. Aníta´s horses are well trained and since there is a lot of horses to choose from the farm´s own breeding line, the perfect mount for you will be found. Accomodation is provided in the cozy farm guesthouse. Please note sleeping bag accommodation |

Day by day itinerary
Day 1: Golden Circle – Meet the horses Pick up in the morning at 10 AM at BSÍ bus terminal in Reykjavík. We start by a day full of sightseeing as we visit Thingvellir National Park, the Geyser area with erupting hot spring Strokkur and beautiful waterfall Gullfoss. In the afternoon we check into our cozy farm house accommodation at the farm and meet our new friends – the friendly Icelandic Horses that are bred and trained by your lovely local host Aníta. At the welcome dinner at the farm the route for the first ride tomorrow and your riding abilities and expectations will be discussed. Day 2: Riding along the trails of the sheep After breakfast we meet the horses again and start our pleasure ride through green and lucious meadows, home to the Icelandic Horse and Sheep. We visit some ancient turf house sheep houses and the Landréttir Sheep paddock which is used during September when the farmers ride into the mountains to collect the sheep to be sorted. After a lovely 5 hours ride we reach a farm where we can leave the horses for the night while we return to the farm guesthouse for dinner and accommodation. Day 3: Riding and hiking with Mt Hekla view Today´s ride will take you from the farm where we left the horses last night to Hellnar farm where we will explore the magnificent caves that were found close to the farm. There is speculation that they were made and inhabited by Irish eremitic munks that lived in Iceland even before the Vikings started to settle here in the late 9th century. We leave the horses and set out for some hiking in the beautiful nature in the farmland around Mt. Hekla. On our way back to the guesthouse we stop at a local swimming pool to rest in the geothermal water of the pool and hot tubs! (Riding today 2 hours). Day 4: Spring awakening in the countryside In the morning we set off for another lovely 4 hour ride as we take the horses home from Hellnar farm back to their home farm. We ride through a variety of landscapes and enjoy the rich birdlife of the area. Iceland is an heaven for birds and during springtime thousands of birds flock to Iceland to nest. Expect to see and hear Golden Plovers, Whimbrels and Snipes! A feast for the ears and eyes of every nature lover. Back at the farm our horses deserve a last cuddle as they will have a break tomorrow while we explore Iceland´s South Coast by car. Day 5 South Shore and back to Reykjavík After breakfast we need to pack your luggage and head out by car along the breathtaking South Shore with views of the volcanic Westman Islands, numerous waterfalls and black lava beaches. We will go for a picnic at a scenic place before heading back to Reykjavík. Arrival in Reykjavík late afternoon/early evening. Please note the accommodation in Reykjavík is not included but can be arranged! Exploring Iceland reserves the right to alter routes, itineraries or timetables should the necessity arise.
