Southern Highland Riding Adventure

Exploring the fascinating world of the remote highland between Mt. Hekla and Tindfjalljökull Glacier

​Spend fascinating riding days in the wilderness between Mt. Hekla, the Queen of Icelandic volcanoes and majestic Tindfjallajökull glaciers with its picturesque snow covered peaks. We ride with a herd of free running spare horses all the way to mountain hut Hungursfit in the famous Fjallabak area travelling on high mountain tracks accessible only on horseback. We will also have wonderfull views of beautiful mountain Thrihyrningur from our mountainhut Foss and ride through Sagaland as we will come close to  some famous saga locations in the Fljótshlíð valley and around. 

This is a true small group tour with only 8 guests  which gives the tour a wonderful personal feeling. Your host Róbert and his family will give you the feeling of being one of the team. The daily rides from 4-6 hours in the saddle are only for experienced riders who are happy to ride in faster speed over uneven terrain. Our partners are experienced horse breeders and trainers and have been showing horses with great success and will for sure find your dream horse for this ride!

Day by day itinerary 

Day 1 Arrival 
Your host Róbert will pick you up in Reykjavík at the BSÍ bus terminal at 17:00. At the farm you will have a lovely welcome dinner and an orientation talk for the next days. Relax in the hot tub and get to know your fellow riders!

Day 2 Taking the horses to Kirkjubær farm 
After breakfast we head to the horse stable where we saddle up and prepare for the tour. We start in the paddock so everybody can get to know his horse and receive some basic instructions on how to ride the tölt, the famous smooth gait of the Icelandic Horse. Our first day of the route takes us past the famous farm Oddi á Rangárvöllum, home to many important scholars of the Saga Time. Learn about Sæmundur Fróði and Snorri Sturluson, some of the most important men of the medieval time in Iceland.  We leave the horses at Kirkjubær farm and return to our accommodation t for the night. (Riding distance approx. 20 km)

Day 3 Heading for the highland - Foss Mountain hut 
Today we start heading for the highland. We follow ancient paths used by the Vikings for centuries and ride through black lava formations and large fields of the beautiful purple Alaska Lupin. We spend our night underneath Mt. Thrirhyrningur at the mountain hut Foss next to a wild mountain river.

Day 4 Up in the highland - Fjallabak area 
Today´s route takes us even further into the highland into the famous Fjallabak area. Today we will ride in a landscape coming close to the famous Lord of the Rings movies as we ride across lavafields, ash and pumice and colorful Rhyolite mountains. We ride along the banks of Eystri-Rangá River all the way up to Hungurfit, right north of breathtaking Tindfjallajökull glacier. The horses spend the night at Hungurfit but we drive back to Foss mountain hut.

Day 5 Hungurfit - Foss 
We take another route back to Foss with a great view over the southern lowlands. Look forward to a true high mountain barbecue as we spend our last night up in the mountains!

Day 6 Foss - Bakkakot
Today is going to be a long riding day with approx. 40 km but by now everybody is surely a true Icelandic Cowboy! The horses will be spirited as they smell "home" when we ride across the Eystrí-Rangá River. We follow the river bank of Fiská river to the charming waterfall Tungufoss and ride across Þverá river to get home to Bakkakot farm, where we leave our horses and drive to our resting place for the last night.

Day 7 Departure 
After breakfast, it’s time to say goodbye to your lovely hosts and get ready for departure. You will be back in Reykjavík around 13:00. Accommodation in Reykjavík is not included but can be arranged.
