Day by day itinerary
Day 1: Þingvellir Nationalpark – Geysir hot spring - Gullfoss waterfall - first ride Pick up at your accommodation in Reykjavík at 09:00 am. By bus we go straight to Þingvellir National Park where we are right on top of the mid Atlantic ridge and where we can clearly see the dividing plates. On a walk around the National Park we visit all the historical sites of the Viking area. On we go to the famous Geysir geothermal field where the erupting geyser Strokkur will surely keep us mesmerized! Our last stop will take us to Gullfoss waterfall, where we take plenty of time to see this amazing waterfall from different levels! From there it is only a short drive past beautiful Brúarhlöð canyon to our accommodation for the next nights. We go out to meet the horses and after an introduction head our for our first ride! (Riding time approx. 2 hours). Day 2: Along the Glacier River After breakfast we meet up with the horses again. Today we head out on country roads towards the glacial river Þjórsá and follow the river on beautiful remote bridle paths and glacier view to a goat farm where we can pet and cuddle the cute baby goats. We leave the horses behind at the goat farm and head back to our guesthouse for a nice relaxing bath in the hot tub in the garden. (Riding time approx. 4-5 hours). Day 3: Historical Sheep paddock Reykjaréttir and riding with volcano and glacier view After breakfast we drive back to the horses and take them on another route towards the ancient sheep paddock Reykjaréttir where we learn about the tradition of sending the sheep into the highland for the summer. We continue on our narrow bridle paths with perfect views of Mt. Hekla back towards the guesthouse and farm. (Approx. riding time 4- 5 hours). Day 4: Countryside Ride and visit to the Secret Lagoon Today is the third riding day and we might feel a little muscle ache! So we keep it soft and sweet our our easy countryside ride with perfect views to the glacier Eyjafjallajökull which it erupted in 2010 - thus grounding all North Atlantic airfare! After the ride we take a long and relaxing bath in the natural geothermal spring Secret Lagoon! (Approximate riding time 3 hours). Day 5: Secret Valley Ride with river crossing and visit to Viking Valley Our last day takes on a long ride to the secret valley and the salmon river Stóra-Laxá. We ride through the secluded valley and cross the river several times and get a glimpse of the colorful volcanic glass Rhyolite. We stop for lunch at a dairy farm which also houses a heritage museum with lots of interesting and odd things from the past! This will be a long day in the saddle but by now we ride like true Icelandic Cowboys! After the ride we drive by car into the Viking Valley Þjórsárdalur to walk to the Valley of the Waterfalls and learn about the old Sagas and the brave Vikings who settled here. Back to the farm guesthouse for a lovely farewell dinner. (Approximate riding time 5-6 hours.) Day 6: Lava Cave Raufarhólshellir and back to Reykjavík After breakfast we have to say good bye to our lovely horses before we head off for Reykjavík by car. On the way we stop for a guided walk into one of Iceland´s largest lava tunnels. Equipped with helmets and headlamps we will explore the incredible lava from down below! Back in Reykjavík in the afternoon and drop off at BSÍ bus terminal or your accommodation in the capital area. We are more than happy to arrange your Reykjavík accommodation for you!
