Step back in time with Exploring Iceland and join us on an authentic Icelandic Experience in the darkness underneath the Northern Lights. Find out how our ancestors lived in the old times and listen to stories of ghosts, elves and trolls. Find out how Icelanders celebrated Christmas and how changes were brought about in the daily life in the old turf house farms throughout the centuries. With a little luck we will experience the amazing Northern Lights dancing in the sky - far away from light pollution and the beautiful setting of the old turf houses in the background! Heritage Tour & Natural Wonders of the South
Small Group Tour On a local farm we are met by the lovely goats, horses and other farm animals. The cute and funny goats will certainly bring a smile on everybody´s face while the farmers tell us about their daily life. At the Visitor Center Þjórsárstofa we are invited to watch a short film about the mighty Þjórsá river, from his spring in the Icelandic Highland to the shore. We continue to Skaftholt farm, a farm where organic vegetables are grown with the help of geothermal water and wonderful cheese is produced from the farm´s organic milking cows. Next stop will be Þjórsárdalur valley with its beautiful waterfall Hjálparfoss, the Viking farm reconstruction Þjóðveldisbær A local silk print artist, who gets her inspiration straight from the Icelandic nature greets us in her studio and gives us a fascinating insight into textile printing. Visit to Annríki - a National Costume Workshop
At the workshop you meet the craftsmen and artists behind the National Icelandic Costume - you hear about the history and the fascinating needle- and metalwork behind each piece. A display of about 15 - 20 different costumes is to be found. Our guide and curator of Annríki is a renown specialist in her field for her masterpieces. Guðrún Hildur Rosenkjær is often invited to give lectures about her work in Iceland and abroad. Meet her and her team and learn everything there is to know about the National Icelandic Costume. Be prepared to travel back in time... Included: transfer hotel workshop and back, visit to workshop with lecture in English, coffee and Icelandic doughnuts. |

Have you heard about the Icelandic Search and Rescue Teams?
Thousands of volunteers dedicate themselves to work for the ICE-SAR rescue teams, accident prevention divisions and youth sections. Their joint mission is to prevent accidents and save human lives and valuables. In order to fullfil that role there are extensive groups of volunteers always available, night and day, year round. The ICE-SAR rescue teams number about 100, within these groups there are thousands of people who are always available when needed. The professionalism that characterizes the work of Icelandic rescue teams has brought worldwide attention. The specialist training undertaken by particular rescue groups has resulted in exceptional knowledge of the various conditions that are known to occur, both at sea and on land. Exploring Iceland is happy to arrange a visit for you to meet the heroes behind the Association. During the stop which takes approx. 1 hour you are met by at least one member of the team and they will give you a introduction about their work, their training and experiences. You get to see their equipment and might even try to sit in one of the huge 4x4 they use for their missions. These groups live mainly on donations and Exploring Iceland will donate 100% of the tour price to the group you are visiting! So by visiting these groups you get an exciting insight into their dramatic missions plus you will be doing your bit to keep these wonderful teams of volunteers going. Lectures usually in English, but German can be arranged upon request. |

Icelanders are very proud of their heritage and the traditional national dress of Iceland is a beautiful example of medieval fashion and skilled needlework which truly reflects the pure Icelandic spirit. The national dress is known as Þjóðbúningurinn and still today Icelandic women wear the traditional costumes with many festive occasions.
For groups we offer a photo shooting session where our guests can dress up in the national clothing and have the opportunity of picture taking with or on an Icelandic horse with a genuine Icelandic sheepdog by their side. Guests can choose between a farmer´s Icelandic costume (male and female costume) or like an Icelandic fisherman on the way to sea. |

Go back in time - East Iceland

In May 2016, the Wilderness Center will launch its exhibitions on life in and close to the highlands. The extended exhibition area will reach as far the top of the hills behind the Center as well as to the abondoned farm Kleif, about 3 kms up the valley. Various farm buildings will be turned into showrooms. Upon entering the Centre, the visitor will travel back in time in an adventurous fashion. The exhibitions will lend the Wilderness Center a unique settings.
The whole place is like entering a museum and you can truly experience something very authentic in food, accommodation and the whole environment. |
